The Seasonal Shift As the snow begins to melt across the Wasatch Front and the first signs of spring appear in Pleasant Grove, Spanish Fork, and Salt Lake City, many of us feel a natural urge to "spring clean" our lives. We open windows to let in fresh air and declutter our physical spaces. However, at Sego Lily Counseling, we believe that the most important spring cleaning happens internally.
Just as a home can become cluttered with physical objects, our minds often become cluttered with old patterns of thinking, emotional baggage, and the "static" of daily stress. If you find yourself reacting impulsively to stress, feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, or feeling "numb" and disconnected, it may be time for a mental reset.
Understanding the Three States of Mind
A foundational tool in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)—one of the primary modalities we use to help our clients heal and grow—is the concept of the three states of mind: Emotion Mind, Reasonable Mind, and Wise Mind.
Emotion Mind: In this state, your emotions are in the driver's seat. Your thoughts are ruled by how you feel in the moment. While emotions are vital signals, being stuck in "Emotion Mind" can lead to impulsive decisions, intense anxiety, or reactive conflicts in relationships.
Reasonable Mind: This is the analytical, logical part of you. It focuses on facts, data, and "cold" logic. While this state is helpful for solving a math problem or planning a schedule, it can feel cold or invalidating when applied to human emotions and complex life challenges.
Wise Mind: This is the "middle path". Wise Mind is the integration of both your emotions and your logic. It is that deep, intuitive place where you know what is true and what is effective. When you operate from Wise Mind, you acknowledge your feelings without being controlled by them, and you use your logic without ignoring your heart.
Decluttering with Mindfulness
How do we find this "Wise Mind" amidst the chaos of the holiday aftermath and the rush of a new season? The answer lies in Mindfulness-Based Therapy. Mindfulness isn't just about sitting in silence; it is the intentional practice of "spring cleaning" your attention.
At Sego Lily, our therapists—including specialists in Lehi, Provo, and via Telehealth—help you use mindfulness to "observe and describe" your internal world. By noticing a thought as just a thought, rather than an absolute fact, you create the space necessary to step out of the "Emotion Mind" spiral and into a place of clarity.
Why Mental Spring Cleaning Matters for Healing
For those navigating trauma recovery, PTSD, or faith transitions, the mind can feel like a dangerous place to be. You may have spent years trying to avoid your thoughts or suppress your emotions just to survive.
Our goal is to help you uncover your true potential by creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can slowly begin to "examine the clutter". Whether you are working with our DBT Skills Training groups or engaging in Individual Therapy, we teach you how to:
- Validate Your Experience: Acknowledge the pain of the past without letting it dictate your future.
- Reduce Perfectionism: Let go of the "shoulds" that create mental clutter and self-judgment.
- Participate Fully: Shift from just "getting through the day" to truly experiencing a life worth celebrating.
